The "AKS" series of stabilizing coupling heads from Alko are commonly found as original equipment on European caravans and as optional equipment on some Australian and New Zealand caravans when a 50mm towball is utilized.
These coupling heads use 4 special friction pads to effectively suppress snaking movements of the caravan or trailer by resisting rotation. It is critical to use a 50mm towball that cannot be loosened by rotation due to this design.
Most European tow vehicles are equipped with a rigid forged 50mm towball that is bolted to the towbar, making it unaffected by the friction clamping of the AKS style stabiliser. However, in Australia and New Zealand, most tow vehicles use a conventional towball which is typically fixed through the towbar tongue and secured with a washer and nut.
